The Decider in Chief has orchestrated a state of perpetual crisis, necessitating, he has made exceedingly clear, the elimination of every one of the civil guarantees for which we, as a people, have paid so dearly, and in the sanctity of which, we have invested our entire faith. To him, they are no more than so many impediments to his exercise of total control. Our rights, including presumption of innocence, due process, freedom of speech, protection against arbitrary search and seizure, and all the rest have now been rendered thoroughly contingent.
